About Pazin

Pazin is a town of long and rich tradition, only 30 km away from well-known tourist centres.

The intensity of life here is pretty much the same in winter and summer, with the exception of every first Tuesday in the month, when a flood of curious buyers from all over the Istria run into the town to visit the traditional market. It’s a great opportunity to shop for food and artisan items that come from the four corners of Istria.

The town’s landmark is the old castle that was mentioned in the chronicles for the first time in 983. Pazin Kastel is the largest and best preserved medieval fort in Istria and it now houses the Ethnographic Museum of Istria and the City Museum.

The famous Pazin Chasm is a gigantic natural pit whose sheer rocks loom mysteriously over the Pazinčica river 130m below. The river ends it’s course above ground in the Pazin canyon, where it flows underneath the castle walls and resumes it’s course southwards underground. The Pazin Chasm was made famous by Jules Verne who set the story of Mathias Sandorf in the apparently bottomless cave and has inspired many travellers to write glowing accounts about this natural wonder.

The new Pazin Zip Line is an unmissable opportunity to get to know Pazin Abyss from above. The first line is 220 metres long and descends at the speed of 40 km/h. The second is somewhat longer, around 280 metres, and also faster (50 km/h) and enables you to enjoy the view of the abyss and the famous Castle above it. This line ends at the gazebo above the Babina kuća Cave.
